This brochure was crated for the business Aqua Zoo, a large aquarium home to many different species of fish and underwater plant life from all over the globe. I used blue and purple for the main colors of the scheme because cool colors have a calm feel. The type used for the majority of the brochure is simple, with serifs for good readability. Some of the type used is a sans serif type, and also has a brighter door rather then just black. This was to add emphasis to that particular section of text, and grab a viewers attention quickly. The quote on the third panel is also much larger in scale then the rest of the text on the page, so that the viewer reads that quote first.

Blog Entry 15 – Project 2 Revised Files
Revisions
Adjust Kerning, baseline to combination part, additional line, x height, gradient on peach and leaf small adjustments, aligning.
Blog Entry 16 – Brochure Research
The first brochure is for Adaptive
Adventures Military Operations program or AAMO for short. The
brochure uses lots of imagery and pictures. Some of the photos are
boxed, and aligned within their panels of the brochure. Others,
specifically the skiers without a background, branch over and take up
part of multiple panels. Besides the photos, the main color are black
and red, black for the main text, and red for headers to emphasize
them.
This next brochure is explaining
Biokinetics. The main colors utilized in this brochure are white,
black, yellow, and a few different shades of green. This brochure
has very strong, bold alignment, the headers for paragraphs use a
larger typeface, with a little color to make good contrast with the
information sections of text. However, the images placed throughout
the brochure don't seem to have too much purpose other then to use
space, they are somewhat visually attractive.
Third brochure is for Tregear Public
school. Unlike some of the other brochures, this one does not use
black for the main bodies of type, and instead uses blue and red.
However, the color is still dull enough to be easily readable. The
alignment for the text, as well as the images for this brochure has a
very structured alignment. The panels are very easily defined.
Printed Brochure is for Sommer Center at Bluffton. The first page on the brochure has a picture of the building, as well as a shorter header which states what the building is and what the pamphlet is. Becides the front panel on this brochure, the rest (inside included) is very structured, and has little going on. Although there are Slight headers, and also bullets to align and organize text, the overall brochure may seem a bit dull.
Last Brochure, printed, is for Bluffton's Lion and Lamb art center, This brochure uses lots of purple in the design, with different blocks for section of text, this contrast helps grab a viewers attention. The lion and lamb logo is also displayed on 2 of the brochures panels, which helps with the association. Photographs are also utilized usefully for this brochure.

Blog Entry 13 – Thomas Linder Artist Talk
Contemporary
artist, Thomas Linder went to the Kansas City Art Institute to study
art, as well as Bowling Green State University for graduate school.
He is now a professor, teaching 2D composition as well as some 3D at
BGSU. One thing I really picked up on during the artist lecture was
that Linder really seems to enjoy experimenting with art, and many of
his works are the product of testing out new ideas or materials.
Similar
to his installation in Bluffton's Albrecht gallery, many of his
pieces also use plastic sheeting as a work material. A common shape
he uses is 'the pillow', made with simple squares, the plastic
becomes a complex, billowing form once inflated. Some of his
artworks are kinetic sculptures, utilizing fans or other means of air
to move the pieces. Others have a different focus, Linder uses LED's
and other lights to give his pieces feeling, using different colored
lighting to convey emotion. The concept behind this is that the
audience gets to see the light refracting from the inside of the
sculpture or installation as if it were some type of membrane.

Blog Entry 12 – Project 2 Research Sketches
The first 3 logo sketches belong to the same company, Peach Perfect. Peach Perfect is a chain restaurant business who specializes in making peach themed foods. Costumers who stop by for a visit can enjoy a lovely selection of foods, for example, peach cobbler, peach waffles, peach pie, or even the famous grilled peach and cheese sandwiches.
Number 4 is Emerald Studios, a nail care salon. While the bright green grabs a viewers immediate attention, the small words at the bottom describe features of the salon without being too harsh. Customers who visit Emerald's can have their nails professionally done, or have plastics applied. The Salon also has products available for purchase for both nails and skin care.
Moon Cheese is a gift shop and diner based in Wisconsin. They attract customers and tourists with their unique theme of 'moon cheese', cheese supposedly harvested from the moon. (Really green cheese or swiss) The shop features both locally produced cheeses as well as specialty cheeses from across the globe. Customers can either shop for cheese, or sit down for dinner and be able to choose from a white variety of cheese themed foods.
This is a logo for a locksmith business called The Locksmith's Association. They can install things like locks or deadbolts, they can duplicate keys, and even pick lock cars for customers who have locked themselves out of their vehicles. Since this is a symbolic logo, the company name is not present, however a viewer is still able to recognize the key symbols and perhaps associate the main idea.

Blog Entry 12 – Jordan Tate Artist Talk
During Jordan Tate's artist lecture, he
talked a lot about some of the main ideas that inspire his artwork.
Many of his works involve conceptual ideas revolving around the idea
of space and time, or limitations and capability of material.
For instance, in one of the sections
of his piece, “Gambit Warning” Tate chose to represent the number
code for the color Yves Klein blue, a color which shows up on a
computer screen, but cannot be transported to paper. Since the color
cannot be literally represented, the piece then demonstrates this
loss while talking about the capability of material.
Jordan Tate also talked a lot about
the notion of infinity, and how we as humans need to place limits on
things in order to actually understand them. He was very enthusiastic
about the idea that since there is a possible infinite amount of
space, there is therefore an infinite percentage of a chance that
there is an alternate universe somewhere nearly identical to our own.
He is currently working on a piece that relates to the idea of
'infinity' by trying to recreate a work that is like a black hole.
That is, using something blacker then black, or even 'an infinite'
black.

Blog Entry 11 – Logo Type Examples
First iconic logo example is the 'target' from Target corporation, an American retailing company. The logo is a very simplified version of an archery target. It is made out of three simple circles, and displayed with the company's theme colors. The red is very bold, and the eye of the target really grabs a viewers attention.
The next symbolic logo is the bird used to represent the website Twitter. This logo is also made out of very simple shapes, however it is still detailed enough to be recognized as a bird. The website and it's logo really play on one another (birds tweeting on twitter). This help users make the connection and associate the logo with the website easily.
This combination logo, used for Dove soap, combines a script font with a small graphic of a dove. The sweeping letters of the text give the logo a relaxed, but very elegant feel. The dove on top helps the viewers associate the product with it's name.
This logo, for Pantene Pro-V shampoo, also uses a combination of type and graphic. The text has a very strong and sturdy feel. The golden swirl is much more gentle and organic, creating a nice contrast. Perhaps the swirl is supposed to be associated with long golden hair, which help the viewer make a conection between the product and logo.
Although the logo for Barbie dolls has changed over the years, the logo has always included the classic hot pink color for Barbie's name. The feminine color definitely helps the iconic name stick in the viewers mind. The cursive style of the script type makes it seem like Barbie herself has signed her name, giving the product a 'personal' touch.
This logo uses two different type styles in it's logo. One for the main brand, and one for the sub-branch for that brand. Since the sub-branch PINK is the emphasis here, the text used is much larger and bolder then for the bottom portion of the logo. It is also emphasized with the bright pink color.

Blog Entry 10 – The Non-Designer's Design Book: Type Categories
The first design uses and Oldstyle type so that the text is easy to read, but not dramatic enough to draw to much focus on the string of words.
The second design uses Sans serif, to present the information in a very clean and modern looking way.
This party invitation design uses Script type, to give the design a look which is homemade, handwritten, but still elegant.
This webpage utilizes Slab serif type for its layout. It makes the headline bold, straightforward and noticeable, really grabbing the readers attention.
The word "Horror" in this design is the only word which utilizes a Decorative typeface. This draws emphasis to the word and the style of the type really helps give the piece a spooky feel.
This last design is an advertisement for Modern type. It shows the text readability in a string of words, as well as how easily this style can be used for emphasis by enlarging one word.

Blog Entry 8 – The Non-Designer's Design Book: Proximity
Proximity example 1 is a webpage layout for a photography website, it shows good alignment with the web links and text section, and creates a visual grabber with the blue photograph.
Example 2 for proximity also uses good alignment with the text, with emphasis on sections in bold, and de-emphasized text in smaller font. Violin image breaks up text and also grabs one's attention when first looking at the piece.
Proximity example 3, shows good use of color, size and font style, grabbing interest even without the use of visuals.
Example 4 is the most simple, with only two aligned sections for text. This business card focuses on making the information clear and concise, with minimal detail on the 'business' side of the card.
This last example uses a stylized illustration of a kiwi, aligning the visual with the company name, and also creating an interesting color element. Text for the card is also grouped well.

Blog Entry 6 – Project 1: Critique Image
For my inner-self portrait, I chose
to represent myself, or my soul, with the silhouette of a figure of a figure
hanging from a tree. She is reaching
out, as if to grab some of the melting moonlight in the distance. This represents how I sometimes want to grab
at success or happiness, but often feel like it’s too far away. The tree branch she is hanging from is also
rather thin, and weak. It looks as if it
might drop the hanging figure into the black waters bellow, which symbolize,
fear, doubt, and hopelessness. The
letters visible, but not legible as words in the background also show how the
figure is trying to ‘read’ her future, but can’t because the words are
unclear. During the process of making
this piece, I experimented a lot with different photoshop tools, including
layers, selections, digital painting, adjustments and photo filters. It was often challenging to use tools I was
not previously familiar with. Although I
really enjoyed learning and playing with digital painting and using different
brush tools. Even though this technique
was used in only a small section of my portrait, I still found it extremely
useful in helping me achieve the desired effect.

Blog Entry 5 – Project 1: Research
The first contemporary artist I chose
is Miss Aniela, who is
a fine-art and commercial photographer, as well as a published
author, based in the UK. Aniela works a lot with surreal fashion,
which is roughly defined as a combination of fashion with surreal
style art. Elements, from different time periods are often used or
referenced in Aniela's images, especially in fashion styles or
background locations of the models portrayed in many of the
photographs. This creates an interesting contrast when placed next
to something with a more modern and chic feel. Subtle oddities like
animals, birds, and whimsical photo editing also add to the overall
surreal effect of pieces.
My
second artist is Maggie Taylor. She is a contemporary artist who
works primarily with digital images. She creates her works by
scanning images and other objects to use in her pieces. Creating a
montage with computer editing. Many, though not all, of Taylor's
pieces feature women, creating a possible self portrait effect along
with her surreal content. Many of Taylor's pieces also seem to have
a focus on the 'heads' or faces subjects portrayed in her artwork,
putting an extra emphasis on the brain as well as human emotion.

Blog Entry 1: Photo-Based Design Interaction
Advertisement one features a young woman dressed in a glamorous gold outfit, the color scheme as well as the shape of her neck mimic the J'adore Dior perfume being advertised.
The second advertisement is for the US postal service, and shows an above view of a town bellow, emphasizing the 'every door, every home, every address' motto for direct mail.
The third advertisement is for O.P.I brand nail polish. The pastel color in the ballet photograph is similar to the shades of nail polish also shown.
Advertisement four features a zoom in of blueberries, although it is actually an advertisement for Daisy brand cottage cheese. As shown by the mock sticker near the center of the page, as well as the blurb at the bottom.
The last advertisement I gathered is from Pandora jewelry. There are two photographs in the add, one of a silver bracelet, and the other of what would appear to be a mother bonding with her daughter, possibly while wearing shown bracelet.
